KEKE PALMER CATCHES 'THE VAPORS'; ACTRESS TO PORTRAY 80s RAPPER ROXANNE SHANTE IN NEW INDIE FILM

According to Blackfilm.com, Keke Palmer, who received critical acclaim for her role in Akeelah and the Bee, has been cast to play rapper Roxanne Shanté in the independent film, The Vapors.

Set against the backdrop of New York City's infamous Queensbridge Housing Projects, The Vapors tells the story of Marley Marl, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane and Shanté, who were a part of the pioneering rap group "The Juice Crew". Clifton Powell (Ray) has also been cast to play hip hop DJ and radio host Mr. Magic. The Juice Crew, founded by Mr. Magic's on-air assistant, DJ Marley Marl, was named after one of Magic's aliases, "Sir Juice." Crew members also included Craig G, Tragedy Khadafi, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, Masta Ace, TJ Swan, and Cool V.

After retiring from the rap game, Shante -- known as 'The First Lady of Rap' but born Lolita Gooden -- reportedly received a PhD from Cornell University and has a practice in Queens.

The Vapors will begin filming in January 2008.

Furqaan Clover, who is helming the forthcoming movie Queen of Media: The Wendy Williams Story, is set to direct the project. Marley Marl and Big Daddy Kane are executive producers on the film while the producing company is Furqaan Films.

Palmer, a noted singer, recently released her debut album on Atlantic Records.
