The Five Heartbeats has topped a list naming the best urban movies of all time. The 1991 film, which was written and produced by Keenen Ivory Wayans and its star Robert Townsend, follows the rise and fall of a 1960s African-American vocal quintet aptly named The Five Heartbeats. After an initially rocky start, the group improve, turn pro, and rise to become a top flight music sensation. Along the way however, the guys learn many hard lessons about the reality of the music industry with it's casual racism and greed while the personal weaknesses of the members threaten to destroy the integrity of the band. The movie also starred Michael Wright, Leon, Diahann Carroll, Tico Wells, Troy Beyer and Harold Nichols.And here's an unknown fact regarding the movie: The scene where Big Red beats up and dangles a singer out of a window over royalties is alleged to have actually happened to the late singer, Jackie Wilson.
